Lab Technician – 3D Fabrication

Description

The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) continues to grow and seeks fulltime
candidates to join our team in the 3D production area, with a goal start date late-
August 2024. This position is on-site, supports a vibrant community of makers, and
is responsible for monitoring the daily use of the lab, providing training and instruction to
students, and maintaining a safe environment. Reports to the Director of the 3D Lab.
Responsibilities include, but not are limited to:
1. Promote, nurture, and advance a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive educational
environment.
2. Collaboratively work with students, faculty, staff, and peers.
3. Conduct 3D Lab certifications, enforce 3D Lab safety rules and procedures and
supervise student equipment use.
4. Instruct individuals on best practices and procedures for a wide range of material
and tool-specific processes for all users, from first-time and entry-level users, to
advanced practitioners.
5. Provide one-on-one and group technical instruction for processes and material use
for students across all disciplines and levels of the college.
6. Contribute to college-wide sustainability efforts - reuse, recycle, repurpose material
and reduce waste where possible and appropriate.
7. Maintain and repair hand tools, power tools, equipment, and machinery as
needed. Provide recommendations for upgrades when appropriate.
8. Maintain shop cleanliness and organization for equipment, instructional areas and
supplies storage.
9. Assist in organizing and maintaining physical sales stock, 3D Lab & course material
inventories, and updates to equipment database, check-out systems, and SDS
database.
10. Continuously learn, expand knowledge, and cross-train to provide support when
necessary on rapid prototyping processes (including 2D & 3D modeling for

CNC/CAD/CAM, 3D printing and laser cutting); cold and hot-forming metals
processes (including cutting, welding, fabrication and casting), as well as plaster
casting and ceramics production processes.
11. Assist in training and providing on-floor support to student employees.
12. Assist with projects, research and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
 Bachelor’s degree or 5-7 years commensurate professional experience required.
Advanced degree preferred. Degree in Art, Architecture, Design, or relevant
experience working in education a plus.
 Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in a comparable woodworking
shop, or academic lab setting with comprehensive knowledge of shop processes and
fabrication techniques for a variety of materials including wood, plastics, metal, and
composite materials, etc.
 Working knowledge of analog production and prototyping equipment and processes
with a strong focus on woodworking is a must. Must demonstrate expertise and
comprehensive knowledge of safety, additive and subtractive processes and
fabrication techniques for a variety of materials including, but not limited to wood,
plastics, metal, ceramics and composite materials.
 Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn machine repair skills essential.
Experience with troubleshooting, repair and maintenance processes for tools,
equipment and machinery used in wood, metals, and/or plastics processes
preferred.
 Ability to instruct intro to advanced skill levels in a variety of process areas.
 Must have basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
Experience with Canvas, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop are very
helpful. Experience with Fusion, SketchUp, Solidworks, AutoCAD, VCarve, Blender
or other mesh, parametric, CAD, or CAM software preferred.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
 Knowledge of current safety regulations and best practices for analog, machinepowered
and automated digital processes.
 Must possess effective oral and written communication skills and ability to positively
interface and collaborate with a broad range of constituencies.
 Must have the ability to effectively mentor and instruct students in group and oneon-
one settings within an academic environment.
 Strong customer service and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to support
diverse populations with a high degree of cultural competence.
 Must possess strong organizational and multi-tasking skills, the ability to self-direct
and take initiative, along with creative problem-solving skills.
Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. wear PPE and safely meet the physical
demands of the work environment.
