DEPARTMENT: Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology (GEST) Center
Position is located at the Goddard Space Flight Center located in Greenbelt, Maryland.
GEST and NASA GSFC is seeking a video journalist or new media producer with a passion for visual science storytelling. We are looking for a producer to generate stories on science topics generally related to NASA’s remote sensing and Earth Observing System including climate change, Earth system science, oceans, global biosphere and productivity, atmosphere, aerosols and stratospheric ozone losses and recovery, and observation of natural disasters such as wildland fires, hurricanes, floods, drought. This fellowship will also involve a fair number of stories from the popular Landsat series of missions. Duties of the position include researching, proposing, and producing space science programming for use by a wide array of audiences including broadcast, print and online media, educators, park rangers, students, museums, and the general public; producing short form video on demand (podcast/vodcast), video news releases, live public affairs and news programming, educational vignettes, vblogs, webcasts, and integrated web content; working with senior producers, scientists, writers and web developers on all phases of production: developing and pitching story ideas, working with animators and graphic artists to develop core visual content, writing, shooting, editing, and sharing/distribution; and managing multiple projects and producing superior content under tight deadlines. Interest and awareness of NASA's scientific missions Is desirable. The ideal candidate should be a gifted visual communicator who is familiar with video and new media production. It is desirable to have experience in journalistic/newsroom environment. Since many of our stories require data visualization, the ability to work with data visualizers and animators and knowledge of the tools, techniques, and language of visualization is very valuable. Personal participation and interest in user-generated content and online communities such as YouTube, Facebook, and Flickr would be valuable. The candidate should have an understanding of the evolving digital landscape is affecting news, journalism and educational programming.
