Assistant/Associate Professor Position in Media Arts & Science

The Indiana University School of Informatics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) invites applicants for a tenure-track appointment in Media Arts & Science (MAS) to begin August 1, 2010.

The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as mentor students in senior capstones and thesis projects. In addition to teaching concepts in new media, candidates must be able to teach new media production since many courses include hands-on skills building. The MAS program offers a range of courses in digital media theory and production, including courses in digital storytelling, multimedia design, Web technologies, game design, 2D/3D modeling and animation, audio and video production, and virtual worlds. The School has state-of-the-art facilities including fully equipped classrooms and media labs, studios for sound design and chroma key work. Access to advanced displays and virtual environments is also available within the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex.

Candidates must also have a relevant research agenda with a record of publication, and must demonstrate the potential to create an externally funded research program. The School strongly promotes research that is collaborative with colleagues from other human-centered or life science disciplines within the School, as well as with faculty from other units on the IUPUI campus. MAS faculty currently conduct research in the areas of emerging media technologies, gaming, collaborative decision-making, media and technology adoption, media applications and implications of new media.

Indiana University is an academic leader in the development and use of information technology. The School of Informatics was founded 10 years ago and is the first completely new school in the United States devoted exclusively to Informatics. The School of Informatics offers three Ph.D. programs (Human-Computer Interaction, Bioinformatics, and Health Informatics), four Master’s programs (Media Arts & Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Bioinformatics, and Health Informatics), and three Baccalaureate programs (Media Arts & Science, Informatics, and Health Information Administration).

The IUPUI campus, with over 30,000 students, is located on a large tract of land adjacent to downtown Indianapolis and bordered by the White River. IUPUI offers a full range of academic programs, with degrees from both Purdue University and Indiana University. The School of Informatics is situated on the academic medical campus, home to the Indiana University School of Medicine, the Roudebush VA Medical Center, Clarian Health, the Schools of Nursing, Dentistry, Social Work, as well as the Schools of Engineering and Technology and Science. The School of Informatics is currently engaged in and actively promotes cross-campus research collaborations with these units.

We will consider candidates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. Candidates for this position should have their foremost expertise in media arts and science and related media development and technology, with an emphasis on new and emerging media research. Candidates must have a Ph.D., have a demonstrated publication record in media-related research, and a record of effective teaching. Rank and salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
