Position: Lead Set Designer (Feature Film)
Functional Area: Design
Reports To: Art Director / Director
Overall accountability:
To help design the film’s sets and environments, taking into account any styles, direction, and guidance established by the original Production Designer, the Art Director, VFX Supervisor and Director
Duties:
- Create strong set designs and set breakdowns consistent with the show’s look and feel.
- Utilize previous design experience to design environments which hit the quality bar, and vision of the original production designer, and the goals of the production.
- Note feedback and revise designs as defined by the productions Art Director as necessary.
- Research visual reference material to inform designs.
- Liaise with the film’s modeling department and modeling supervisor to realize set designs for 3D creation.
- Stay up to date with Pre-Viz developments and the shaping of the shots/sequences, noting and discussing set issues.
- Create 2D painted backgrounds required to complete any 3D environments, sets or scenes on the film, while working with the design and modeling departments
- Communicate regularly and proactively with the design team, modeling team, and FX team to ensure that designs are production-friendly
- Raise potential design issues with the Modeling, FX and Animation departments
- Meet or beat design deadlines
- Proactively update the Art Director as the to status of tasks
- Integrate matte paintings into the sets / environments being conceived, when required.
- Review one's own schedule and notify production of any tasks that may be missing or improperly specified.
