POSITION SUMMARY
The Technical Director (TD) will create visual content for the Morrison Planetarium, 3-D stereoscopic theater, and other venues within the California Academy of Sciences. The position reports to the Director of Morrison Planetarium and Science Visualization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Create high-end visualization animations, working with data from observations,
computational simulations, and theoretical descriptions
• Animate camera moves
• Manipulate and apply texture maps, and paint textures
• Light, shade, and render digital models
• Composite and color correct digital elements
• Develop models of hard-body and organic objects
• Develop procedural and/or data-derived representations of phenomena
• Integrate real-time space visualization software with the off-line rendering pipeline
• Assist in the development of software tools, technical methods and processes to
augment and streamline the content creation pipeline
• Script utilities, tools, and plug-ins in various software packages
• Mentor entry-level artists and assist and direct other technical staff, as needed
• Collaborate with scientists, technical staff, modelers, other technical directors,
visualization artists and painters
• Document production techniques, designs, methods and best practices
• Collaborate in the development of efficient, artist-friendly workflows
• Become proficient with Uniview and DigitalSky, fulldome, real-time 3D atlas of the
universe software that will support content creation
• Follow all Academy safety regulations
• Other relevant duties as assigned
