Role Summary
MSG is looking for a Head of Camera to join a groundbreaking advanced camera and immersive capture department based in Los Angeles. We are forging a new category of motion picture imaging, advanced entertainment, and experiential storytelling, which is redefining the future of entertainment. As the content delivery team for the MSG Sphere, we are creating world-class content at an unprecedented scale for the largest LED screens ever made.
The Head of Camera is responsible for the coordination and oversight of all activities related to image acquisition and content origination for Sphere, assuring groundbreaking, consistent, and best-in-class material is delivering to MSG Sphere venues. As such, this role requires a deep knowledge of existing and emerging camera and advanced production workflows for professional motion picture imaging at the highest level. Ideal candidates will have experience shooting and producing high quality, immersive and/or giant screen content for networks, studios, immersive or experiential distribution with internal teams and external vendors working in tandem. In addition to helping to develop purpose-driven technology applications for Sphere show content, the Head of Camera will have direct oversight over mobilizing and deploying technology-specific camera strike teams, play a vital role in assuring that filmed content meets Sphere’s unique needs.
Specific Functions/Activities Summary
- Work closely with SVP of Capture to determine, deploy, and supervise capture teams applying relevant capture technology for Sphere main shows.
- Be fluent in the latest motion picture advanced imaging technology, including (but not limited to) live action cinematic capture, game engines renderers, real-time, motion capture, 3D laser scanning, live streaming, volumetric imaging, and high-resolution photography.
- Work nimbly with creatives, live action production teams, VFX, audio, color, and the Sphere Playback team to generate, create, and capture all imaging needs for Sphere shows.
- Be able to connect creative concepts with and technical execution with clarity and simplicity
- Understand and be familiar with the application for pre-vis and virtual production tools and how they fit into modern production workflows
- Staff, schedule, budget, and manage camera teams armed with purpose-built technology for Sphere shows
- Establish new technical protocols to assure smooth handoff between production and post production to assure that high quality content creation remains on schedule and within budget.
- Relate with other industry stakeholders to apply and introduce new and emerging technologies to Sphere‘s suite of capture tools.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a Technical Producer, Director of Photography, or VFX Supervisor in high-end production, with at least two years working in immersive content, virtual production, live production, gaming, or advanced imaging.
- Experience working with teams spread over multiple locations and interfacing with VFX, audio, and third-party vendors.
- Proven track record managing multiple fast-paced projects in a large organization.
- Must have an advanced knowledge of industry standards and common production processes including cameras, optics, storage, visual effects, motion graphics, color, and QC.
- Have a reputation and proven track record for creating technical success with creative ambiguity
- Familiarity with current trends and workflows across the industry for multi-camera array and high-resolution capture, HDR, VFX and other high-fidelity imaging techniques
- Excellent problem solving, attention to detail, and organizational skills
- Must be a team player and work well under tight deadlines
