Department/College Description
RIT’s Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science is dedicated to advancing the frontiers of imaging science and its technical applications. With current funding from NSF, NIH, NASA, DoD, foundations, and industry, the Center’s 17 core and 7 research faculty are responsible for a significant fraction of research funding at RIT. The Center’s active research areas are biomedical imaging, optics & instrumentation, remote sensing, vision science, astronomy & space science, computer vision & computational photography, free-form optics, historical document imaging, situational awareness, and virtual reality. CIS offers B.S., M.S., Ph.D. degrees in imaging science with an experiential and systems emphasis. The programs focus on the physics of image formation, quantitative spectral and temporal image analysis and information extraction, and the development and application of sensor systems and imaging instrumentation. The faculty have extensive collaborations across the university and with other universities, industry, and national labs. CIS faculty participate in RIT’s Ph.D. programs in color science, astrophysical sciences & technology, microsystems engineering, and computing & information sciences. Detailed Job Description
RIT seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as the Director of the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science, an interdisciplinary and experiential research and education center dedicated to advancing the technical frontiers of imaging science.
The Director is responsible for leading the academic, research, service, and operational activities of the faculty, staff, and students. Under the leadership of the CIS Director, the Center serves national and international needs by continuing to pioneer unique imaging science and technical applications. The daily operation of the Center requires an open, inclusive, and effective management style that inspires and supports the faculty, staff, and students in their individual and collaborative efforts. Federal, state, foundation, and industry research partnerships and funding are central to the success of the CIS research and academic programs. The Director plays a critical role in providing leadership and advocacy for obtaining external funds for the Center, cultivating funding agencies and donors and leading opportunities for center-wide strategic proposals. The Director is expected to extend the Center’s reputation and sphere of influence nationally and globally by leveraging the interdisciplinary collaboration within the Center and across the University and by expanding and strengthening relationships with its partners in academia, government, and industry.
Responsibilities include:
• Facilitate the development and execution of the Center’s strategic plan to promote academic and research excellence
• Manage CIS financial resources
• Cultivate existing and prospective donors and research partners
• Encourage discovery and entrepreneurship opportunities for faculty, staff and students
• Identify interdisciplinary projects and programs to extend the breadth of understanding while leveraging University expertise
Required Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate must have:
• An earned doctorate, with significant research experience related to imaging science
• Demonstrated strong management, leadership, communication, and advocacy skills
• The ability to facilitate a broad research portfolio that encompasses the many dimensions of imaging science, fostering and encouraging collaboration with other academic disciplines
An appropriate candidate may be appointed at the level of full professor with tenure.
