Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Description

A three-dimensional visualization environment for archival and synthetic imagery to aid in analysis and tasking

The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing (DIRS) laboratory in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science (CIS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is looking for a highly motivated researcher to take on a postdoctoral fellowship under the Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program (more information regarding this program can be found at http://www.icpostdoc.org/).

Description
Our program objective is to create a predictive visualization environment in which effective tasking and analysis can be carried out to aid in specific intelligence tasks.  A three-dimensional visualization environment can allow the collection methods, for a particular intelligence scenario, to be pre-assessed for their utility in addressing the required task at hand.  The ability to introduce factors such as date, time of day, meteorological conditions, scene configuration, and sensor type; and see how these choices influence the quality of the collected image data and the ability of this data to serve as a basis for solving the proposed intelligence problem, is an important tool for the analyst and tasking managers.

A three-dimensional visualization environment should be able to utilize geometric point data, meshed grids, texture data from existing image data sets, geographically-organized point observations, and synthetically-modeled radiometrically-correct texture from any imaging modality, to aid tasking and analysis.  The presence of this data in a three-dimensional, navigable environment allows for natural “browsing” of this data.  This environment, no matter how rich with real-world data, will only contain a limited number of parameters under which collection can be explored.  Only the addition of the ability to simulate other sets of image data from any collection modality will enable this environment to assess the intelligence problem where previous data may not exist or that has not been pursued before, utilize all collection platforms that may be available, and find a novel and coherent strategy for discovering a solution.

A successful candidate for this position will have advanced skills in three-dimensional visualization in environments such as the ESRI products, Google Earth, etc.  The candidate must have experience in the extraction of three-dimensional geometric data from multiple-view airborne imagery or LiDAR data.  A strong interest is the geographic registration of disparate imagery/geometric data sources using techniques such as maximum mutual information as well as radiometric-accurate synthetic image generation/modeling is requirement.
