Description
The School of Visual Arts and
Design, College of Arts and Humanities, University of Central Florida seeks an
associate professor for research and teaching in digital media. This is a nine-month,
tenure-negotiable position the duties of which include teaching, research, and
service. Research and teaching responsibilities include contributing to the
mission of Digital Media in appropriate areas of scholarship. Appropriate specializations may include areas
such as virtual/augmented/mixed reality, animation, physical computing,
wearable or ubiquitous computing, 3D modeling, mobile game development, digital
ethnography, web design, game design, interactive media development, medical
simulation or healthcare application development, or other areas within the
domain of digital media. Candidates are

Digital media faculty actively
collaborate with UCF’s Institute for Simulation and Training. In addition,
school faculty have an active role in UCF’s Center for Emerging Media located
in downtown Orlando. Digital media faculty conduct creative research in areas
related to interactive entertainment and learning (e.g., online; computer,
mobile, and console-based computer games; virtual worlds; military simulation)
and develop new techniques, content and applications in support of the arts and
cultural heritage preservation.
UCF offers undergraduate B.F.A. and
B.A. degrees as well as M.F.A and M.A. degrees. The School of Visual Arts &
Design has approximately 2,700 majors across four areas that include
architecture, digital media, film, and studio arts.
The school encourages multidisciplinary collaborations that explore new combinations
of story, imagery, sound, and interaction as well as technical development and
critique. Faculty members are expected to actively pursue and obtain external
funding and to develop projects that achieve peer reviewed recognition for
innovation and excellence.
The position has an anticipated
start date of August 2015, pending the availability of funding.
Position Minimum Qualifications
At the time of appointment, the
applicant must hold a terminal degree in an appropriate discipline such as
digital media, computer science, engineering, digital art, or a media-related
discipline from an accredited institution. Candidate must have a proven record
of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentation in the area of
digital media or a closely related discipline.
Candidates must also have teaching experience at the university level.
Preferences
The ideal candidate will show
evidence of being a theorist and practitioner who combines technical expertise
with a strong grounding in the visual arts and the humanities. Candidates should be proficient in and be
able to provide evidence of having used appropriate digital tools and
technologies to create a project/conduct research. Preference will be given to candidates who
have a strong record of obtaining research funding from external funding/grant
agencies or foundations, and who have served as a Principal Investigator (PI)
on funded grants or projects.
