Description
The School of Visual Arts and
Design, College of Arts and Humanities, University of Central Florida seeks an
assistant professor for teaching and research in digital media. This is a
nine-month, tenure-earning position, the duties of which include teaching three
courses per semester, research, and service. Teaching responsibilities include
contributing to the curriculum and coverage of the game design and development
specialization within the school.
Digital media faculty actively
collaborate with UCF’s Institute for Simulation and Training. In addition,
faculty have an active role in UCF’s Center for Emerging Media located in
downtown Orlando. Digital media faculty conduct creative research in areas
related to interactive entertainment and learning (e.g., online; computer,
mobile, and console-based computer games; virtual worlds; military simulation)
and develop new techniques, content, and applications in support of the arts
and cultural heritage preservation.
UCF offers undergraduate B.F.A. and
B.A. degrees as well as M.F.A and M.A. degrees. The School of Visual Arts &
Design has approximately 2,700 majors across four areas that include
architecture, digital media, film, and studio arts.
The school encourages multidisciplinary collaborations that explore new
combinations of story, imagery, sound, and interaction as well as technical
development and critique. Faculty members are expected to actively pursue and
obtain external funding and to develop projects that achieve peer reviewed
recognition for innovation and excellence.
The position has an anticipated
start date of August 2015, pending the availability of funding.
Position Minimum Qualifications
At the time of appointment,
candidates must hold a terminal degree in an appropriate discipline such as
game design, game development, digital media, computer science, engineering,
digital art, or a media-related discipline from an accredited institution.
Candidates must possess strong communication skills; have experience with at
least one contemporary game engine; have familiarity working with scripting
languages such as Lua, JavaScript, or C#; and have strong skills in either the technical
or artistic aspects of game design.
Preferences
Full-time teaching experience at an
accredited institution of higher education is preferred. Candidates will
provide evidence of successful work completed in game development within the
last three years and experience working with common game development tools.
These tools may include engines (e.g. Unity3D, Unreal, etc.) or art tools (e.g.
MudBox, Maya, or Z-Brush). They will have a research agenda focused on an
appropriate area for the school such as interactive media development,
furthering game design, mobile development and publishing, 3-D modeling and
animation, simulation, custom hardware, or virtual and augmented reality. Evidence
of external funded research is strongly desired. Proficiency in diverse
programming languages, console development, mobile development, visual
techniques, and industry practice is valued. The ideal candidate will show
evidence of being a theorist and practitioner who can combine technical
expertise with a strong grounding in the visual arts and the humanities.
