(Job
Summary/Basic Function)
The
Illustration Department at the Ringling College of Art and Design is seeking
qualified candidates who are broadly trained for the Visual Development
discipline and passionate about teaching courses in a collaborative
environment. This position will focus on developing and delivering Visual
Development courses within the program. Successful candidates should also show
qualifications and proven success teaching figure drawing and or observational
painting in traditional studio media. Candidates should have the
expertise and ability to teach and incorporate the following competencies and
instructional skill sets for:
- Creating sequence, movement,
compositional design
- The
development of character backstory and environment
- Teaching
how story is communicated through sequential narrative
- The
development of animatics relating to story telling
- Ability
to use and teach Adobe Creative Suite applications
- Ability
to use and teach Wacom Cintiq technology
- Incorporating filmic language into course content
- Material use, technique and methods of direct and
indirect painting.
Included among the Duties and Responsibilities of this position are: Teaching first year through upper level
students; three courses or nine credits per semester; ongoing commitment to
creative work/scholarship in the profession is expected and active
participation with faculty, department and college service is required, as well
as:
- Attending relevant department meetings and critiques
- Collaborating
with other faculty teaching the same course to optimize the delivery of
the common competencies to students across majors
- Sharing
projects, examples and resources with area colleagues
- Participation
with on-going project reviews
- Work
with other faculty and the Department Head of Illustration on variations
to the delivery of the common competencies
- Attend
and participate in end-of-semester curricular reviews, assessment and
planning meetings
This
is a full time faculty appointment with benefits. The salary will be
commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The College
has a supportive, collegial faculty, a curriculum that strongly values

(Minimum
Qualifications)
- A master’s degree that demonstrates expertise
appropriate for teaching art and/or design (a minimum of 18 graduate
semester hours in the teaching discipline) OR a 4 year professional degree
in art or design and equivalent professional experience, training and
expertise with an appropriate record of professional achievement in the
field.
- An
ability to clearly communicate and work effectively with faculty, students
and administrators
- Proficiency
in digital technology relevant to delivering the Visual Development
courses
- Willingness
to work in a collaborative educational environment
- Experience
and training in observation based painting and drawing from life.
(Preferred
Qualifications)
- A MFA or other terminal degree in a the studio arts
- Successful
college level teaching
- Active
record of creative achievement, professional activity or exhibition
- Demonstrated
ability in traditional representational figure drawing and/or painting
- Understanding
of the importance of connecting digital and traditional methods
- Knowledge
of the history of painting and illustration
