Description
The Center for Design Innovation, a multi-campus research center of the statewide University of North Carolina system, is seeking a visionary leader with entrepreneurial spirit to provide overall direction and coordination of the Center's activities in four primary areas: 1) research, 2) instruction, 3) economic development, and 4) fundraising through contracts and grants as well as private giving. CDI's primary goal is to catalyze economic transformation of the state’s Piedmont Triad area through design-focused activity based on advanced digital technologies.
Headquartered in Winston-Salem, NC (the City of Arts and Innovation), CDI collaborates among partnering organizations with strong and unwavering commitment to the arts, excellence in healthcare research and technology, and opportunities for specialized and advanced education.
The Director works closely with the leadership, faculty, academic units, sponsored programs, and research and economic development functions of the partner universities in setting creative and administrative priorities for the Center. Additionally, the Director is responsible for envisioning and developing alliances and partnerships for research within and outside the universities and managing and implementing operating policies, which include budget planning, and management. The Director reports to the Vice President for Research and Graduate Education at UNC General Administration.
Terminal degree in a discipline with relevance for design.
Credentials suitable for tenure/tenure track position at WSSU and/or a faculty appointment at UNCSA.
Minimum of five (5) years' leadership experience in positions of increasing responsibility in an appropriate professional arts organization or university setting.
Experience in design (specifically a portfolio, a publication record, teaching experience).
Demonstrated success in securing external funding for programs and projects.
Demonstrated success in leading diverse stakeholders towards realization of shared goals.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies.
Excellent communications skills.
Qualifications that warrant an appointment as a faculty member or affiliate faculty member in one of the disciplines at UNCSA or WSSU.
Skill in public speaking and advocacy on behalf of CDI events, projects and initiatives.
Ability to work with a diverse set of arts professionals, individual donors, corporate and foundation sponsors and the general public.
Flexibility to travel on CDI business.
