Industrial Design Department
The
Department of Industrial Design in the Division of Architecture and
Design invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment at the
rank of Assistant Professor to begin fall 2014.
The
department seeks candidates with the ability to teach general design
principles and with a deep understanding of design processes. The ideal
candidate will also bring a specialist area of expertise to the
department that we can incorporate into our advanced curriculum and
research culture. This may be in areas such as: Interaction Design
(UI/UX); Advanced and Emergent Manufacturing Techniques; Design Research
Methods; Business Practices; or something that has not been imagined
yet.
A relevant Master’s Degree and a minimum 3 years of
teaching experience or equivalent combination of applicable academic and
professional experience is preferred. The successful candidate will
join RISD ID’s nine full-time faculty in supporting world-renowned
design explorations and education.
The discipline of
“Industrial” Design continues to rapidly change, evolve, separate, and
collaborate as it embraces changes in not only technologies of inception
and production, but also changes in society, culture, and the ways that
we make our living on this planet. We believe that to stay at the
forefront of these changes requires the curriculum to be continuously
reviewed and rejuvenated. We believe in the power of the hand, the mind,
the machine and the computer. We believe in collaboration across a
diverse and innovative community with extensive local, national, and
international networks. Our bustling workshops, studios spaces, labs,
and digital fabrication facilities along with RISD’s multidisciplinary
environment greatly support the curriculum. We have strong industry and
professional partnerships that include NASA, Samsung, Hasbro, Microsoft,
ESPN, Brown University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We
have produced graduates who work in the best agencies in the world, who
start their own design companies, and who go on to become entrepreneurs
reinventing business.
