Open Rank Tenure Track Faculty Position
Human-Computer Interaction and Media Arts and Science
The Indiana University School of Informatics (SoI) at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) invites applicants for an open rank tenure track appointment that overlaps two disciplines: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Media Arts & Science (MAS), to begin August 1, 2011. Because this is a jointly held position between HCI and MAS, candidates should have theoretical and applied knowledge that spans substantial areas of both fields. The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as mentor students in both disciplines, including undergraduate senior capstones, graduate final master’s projects / theses, and doctoral dissertations.
The HCI program includes 21 Ph.D. students, 30 M.S. students, and approximately 12 Graduate Certificate students. The Undergraduate HCI Certificate is new and will be joined with additional joint degrees that link HCI with other Schools on the IUPUI campus. The MAS program includes 400 undergraduate students and 20 M.S. students, with a Ph.D. in MAS in the early stages of curriculum development. The School has state-of-the-art facilities including fully equipped classrooms, media and gaming labs, HCI research labs and research facilities, studios for sound design and chroma key work. Access to advanced displays and virtual environments are also available within the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex.
HCI and MAS faculty currently conduct research in the areas of emerging media technologies, video/virtual gaming, HCI design, collaborative decision-making, computer-mediated communication and cultural cognition, robot and android science, health and serious interactive game design, and biomedical visualization. Collaborative research with faculty members from other Informatics programs and at IUPUI in general is encouraged. The School has strong research themes in Health Informatics and Bioinformatics, including health data exchange, clinical decision support, consumer health informatics, integrated health information systems, interactive health information technologies, systems biology and statistical energy functions, structure-based prediction of folding mechanism, and dynamical network modeling.
The IUPUI campus, with over 30,000 students, is located on a large tract of land adjacent to downtown Indianapolis. IUPUI offers a full range of academic programs, with degrees from both Purdue University and Indiana University. Indiana University is an academic leader in the development and use of information technology. SoI was founded 10 years ago and is the first completely new school in the United States devoted exclusively to Informatics and a range of sub-disciplines. SoI offers three Ph.D. programs (Human-Computer Interaction, Bioinformatics, and Health Informatics), four Master’s programs (Media Arts & Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Bioinformatics, and Health Informatics), and three Baccalaureate programs (Media Arts & Science, Informatics, and Health Information Administration).
SoI is situated on the academic Medical Center Campus, home to the Indiana University School of Medicine, the second largest medical school in the US. During the FY 2009-10, the IUPUI campus was awarded $400.34M for funded research, much of it in the areas of health and life science. SoI has formed several key research partnerships with the IU School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute, an internationally recognized medical informatics research center. SoI also enjoys collaboration with the Roudebush VA Medical Center, Clarian Health (one of the largest health care organizations in the Midwest), the Schools of Nursing, as well as the Purdue Schools of Engineering and Technology and Science. In June 2009, The Economist stated, “Although every state wants to be a hub for life science, Indiana really is one.” Indiana’s comprehensive strengths and leadership in health and health information technology are coordinated by BioCrossroads, a statewide initiative, which partners with research institutions, global companies, philanthropic organizations and government to advance growth and innovation.
Requirements for this appointment include a Ph.D., as well as a record of effective teaching and a proven publication record. Candidates must have a clearly defined research agenda and must demonstrate the ability to create an externally funded research program, i.e., candidates must also be able to establish an independent team-based program with graduate students and seek funding to support them.
